THIRD EYE THOUGHTS - Pineal Gland

The pineal gland and the third eye Chakra share many similarities, including a location deep in the centre of the brain where the third eye is placed in yogic philosophy. The pineal gland is responsible for our connection to light via the circadian rhythm which is also important part of yogic philosophy, in particular yoga nidra.

What are Chakra’s

In yoga, chakras are energy centres that are believed to exist along the spine, and they correspond to specific areas of the body and aspects of consciousness. This is also why yoga was originally a seated practice to align the chakra’s along the spine. There are a total of 7 chakra’s which are all located along the spine.

A Nadi is a subtle energy channel that exists within our bodies. There are three main Nadi’s which flow through our body, they are concepts of the Ida Nadi, Pingala Nadi and Sushumna Nadi. They are the subtle energy channels or pathways that run along the spine.

The Ida Nadi is often associated with the feminine and lunar qualities. It is said to carry a cooling and nourishing energy. Ida Nadi is believed to originate from the Muladhara Chakra (the root chakra) and weave its way upwards, winding around the central channel, called Sushumna Nadi, through each chakra, and eventually terminating at the left nostril.

The Pingala Nadi is the counterpart of Ida Nadi and is often associated with the solar qualities and is quite active. It carries a warming and energising energy. Pingala Nadi is believed to originate from the Muladhara Chakra as well and runs parallel to the Sushumna Nadi, crossing Ida Nadi at each chakra, and terminates at the right nostril.

Where the Ida and Pingala Nadi cross each other at the Sushumna Nadi, is where a chakra (energy centre) is located.

What is the third eye chakra

The third eye in yoga philosophy is closely related to the sixth energy centre, and is also known as the Ajna Chakra.

The third eye chakra is said to enhance your perception and can bring you mental clarity and Amrita (bliss / nectar) through your mindset and changing the way we think.

The Ajna Chakra, located in the space between the eyebrows (often referred to as the "third eye" area), is associated with intuition, inner wisdom, and spiritual insight. It is considered the seat of higher consciousness and is said to be the point where the physical and spiritual realms meet.

The pineal gland

The pineal gland is located deep in the centre of the brain. It is an important gland in the endocrine system, and is responsible for our connection to light via the circadian rhythm and melatonin secretion.

The primary function of the pineal gland is to produce the hormone melatonin. Melatonin plays a critical role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle and circadian rhythms, helping to maintain the body's internal biological clock. Melatonin production is influenced by light and darkness, with higher levels being produced in the evening and at night, promoting sleepiness and readiness for sleep.

Our hormones, stress levels and sleep quality can impact how we are feeling which in turn can impact our mindset.

“My inner wisdom guides me to my highest good. My third eye sees all..”

Yoga Nidra

The practice of Yoga Nidra is associated with the pineal gland and the awakening of higher states of consciousness. Yoga Nidra, also known as yogic sleep, is a powerful relaxation and meditation technique that guides practitioners into a state of deep relaxation while remaining fully conscious and aware. During a Yoga Nidra practice, the aim is to access the subconscious mind and tap into the potential for self-healing, self-discovery, and inner transformation. Yoga Nidra is a powerful practice for relaxation, stress reduction, and self-awareness.

So are they similar?

While the third eye chakra and the circadian rhythm are not directly connected, some meditation and mindfulness practices involving the third eye area may indirectly influence circadian rhythms, such as Regular meditation, including practices focused on the third eye chakra, can help reduce stress, promote relaxation, and improve overall well-being. By enhancing relaxation and reducing stress, meditation may indirectly contribute to better sleep quality and improved circadian rhythms.

It is important to note that while there are symbolic similarities between the pineal gland and the "third eye”, they are distinct concepts. The pineal gland is a physical organ with well-defined physiological functions, whereas the "third eye" is a concept rooted in yogic philosophy and represents intuition, insight, and higher consciousness.

There are often more similarities between yogic philosophy and the scientific understanding of the body than we may first think. These could be similar interpretations which are documented in different languages at different points in time. As yogic philosophy originated in India it was documented in Sanskrit. As we start to understand more, we can see similar concepts being discussed.
