Nature’s supply chain
Updated: Jun 21, 2023
Everything comes from Mother Earth. Whether that is our food, our water, our clothes or even our cars. The raw materials that make up all of our daily essentials are all natural. So through everything around us we are connected to nature, we just need to trace it back to its origin.
We all know that most of our fruits and veggies and water supplies come from nature, but so does a lot more of what we consume.
Many clothing materials are derived from natural sources. Cotton is a natural fiber that comes from the cotton plant (Gossypium). Cotton fibers are produced in the seed pods of the cotton plant, which contain clusters of fluffy fibers known as bolls. These are then farmed and harvested just like many foods.
Silk is a natural fiber that is produced by certain insects, most notably the silkworm. It is known for its natural sheen and is often used to create elegant and delicate clothing items such as dresses, blouses, scarves, and lingerie.
Linen is also made from the fibers of the flax plant. It is a lightweight and breathable fabric with a cool feel. It is commonly used for summer clothing, including shirts, dresses, and trousers.
Thinking about the factories our clothes are made in? Well those materials come from nature too. Most factories are made from Bricks which are commonly made from clay, which is a natural material abundant in many regions. Steel is also a common building material which is primarily made from iron ore, another natural resource alongside wood which comes from trees.
“If conservation of natural resources goes wrong, nothing else will go right” - M.S. Swaminathan
The more we trace our products back up the supply chain, the more we realise it is made from nature. It looks different once it has been moulded but we are so closely connected to nature in everything we do.
When we look through the natural lens, it will change your perspective on everything around you. The need to look after our natural resources is so strong in order to maintain everything around us.
