Ayurveda and yoga

Ayurveda and yoga are closely intertwined and interrelated sister sciences. They both originated from ancient Indian Vedic knowledge and share a common philosophical foundation and holistic approach to health and well-being. While they are distinct disciplines, they complement each other and are often practiced together for holistic healing.




Ayurveda is a traditional system of healthy living that originated in ancient India. The term "Ayurveda" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "Ayur," which means life, and "Veda," which means knowledge or science. Thus, Ayurveda can be translated as the "science of life" or the "knowledge of life."


This has an overlay with the elements of yoga which focus on the physical body. Yoga is a holistic process which aims to unite the mind, body, soul and surroundings.


Ayurveda is a holistic approach to healthcare that encompasses various aspects of life, including physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It focuses on achieving balance and harmony within the body, mind, and environment to promote health and prevent diseases.


According to Ayurvedic principles, each individual is unique, and health is achieved by understanding and balancing one's unique constitution, known as the doshas. The doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—are the three fundamental energies or forces that govern physiological and psychological functions in the body.


Ayurveda utilises a combination of natural remedies, including herbal medicines, dietary guidelines, lifestyle practices, detoxification procedures, yoga, meditation, and more, to restore and maintain health. Both Ayurveda and yoga emphasise the importance of preventive care, self-awareness, self-care and a balanced lifestyle to achieve optimal well-being.


Ayurveda and yoga promote self-awareness and self-care. They encourage individuals to develop a deep understanding of their own unique constitution, needs, and imbalances. This awareness helps in making informed choices and taking appropriate actions to maintain or restore health.


Ayurveda and yoga also share a similar philosophical understanding of the body, mind, and consciousness. Recognising the interconnectedness of these aspects and aim to create harmony and balance within the individual. Both Ayurveda and yoga take a holistic approach to health, considering not only the physical body but also the mind, emotions, and spirit. They emphasise the importance of balancing and nurturing all aspects of one's being for overall well-being.



Overall, Ayurveda and yoga share a common goal of promoting health, balance, and self-awareness. They have been practiced for thousands of years and continue to be relevant today, providing a comprehensive approach to health and healing. They integrates traditional knowledge, observational wisdom, and personalised care to address the unique needs of each individual. While Ayurveda focuses on personalised health practices, dietary guidelines, and natural remedies, yoga offers a wide range of practices for physical, mental, and spiritual development. Together, they provide a comprehensive system for promoting optimal health, vitality, and inner harmony.
