Yoga asana an ode to nature

Ever wondered where the “tree pose” or “Cobra pose” originally got it’s name from? In the practice of yoga asana, many poses are named after elements of nature, animals and plants for a special reason.

Yoga aims to cultivate a sense of harmony and union with the mind, body, soul and surroundings. By naming asanas after elements of nature, it serves as a reminder of our deep connection to the environment. It encourages practitioners to embody the qualities and characteristics of the natural world, fostering a sense of reverence and appreciation for nature and all its beings.

For example, poses named after animals, such as"Cobra Pose" (Bhujangasana), embody the qualities and characteristics associated with the Cobra of confidence and lower back strength. Poses like "Fish Pose" (Matsyasana) might be associated with qualities like openness, receptivity, and fluidity. These poses invite practitioners to tap into the inherent qualities and energies represented by these natural beings.

For poses like "Tree Pose" (Vrikshasana) or "Mountain Pose" (Tadasana) which visually represent the stability, rootedness, and grace of a tree or the strength and stillness of a mountain. These act as a reminder to balance both our body and our mind. To provide stability to our posture but also bring stillness into our mindset.

Next time you are practising yoga asana think of the connection to nature in each pose and visualise the qualities you want to embody!
